PGCC Will Propel Penang Into World-class Logistics Hub - PM
September 12, 2007
PENANG will emerge as a world-class regional logistics and services hub when the RM25 billion Penang Global City Centre (PGCC) project in Batu Gantung here is completed.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said with the modern building features that gave importance to environmental safety, people's well-being. socio-economic and socio-culture development, the PGCC provide the impetus for Penang to the prime mover for the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).
"After making a name and gaining recognition as the Silicon Island for the electrical and electronics industries for over 30 years, Penang will take on an added role as a world-class logistics and quality services hub," he said when launching the PGCC master plan at a hotel here Wednesday.
Abdullah said port and airport facilities in Penang have turned the state as the main gateway to the northern region and to the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) region.
"All this while Penang has been known as the Silicon Island for its electrical and electronics industries. In the years ahead, I believe Penang will become an advanced and well-known logistics and services hub, with Penang providing services of top quality, No. 1 and the best," he said.
Abdullah was happy that the planning of the PGCC took into account all aspects of a congenial human living, applying the knowledge and skills of world-class designers, architects and engineers.
Among them are designer Hani Rashid from the United States and architect Prof Nasrine Seraji from France, who is also an environment activist.
"This will make PGCC as among the projects that will meet Penang's needs as a catalyst to the NCER. It will also be an attraction to foreign investors to open offices or start businesses in this state," he said.
The prime minister hoped the PGCC would be implemented according to schedule without being delayed by approval procedures.
He also thanked the Penang Turf Club for agreeing to relocate its operations to Batu Kawan to make way for the mega project which would have high impact on the NCER development and the country.
The 184ha PGCC is being developed by Abad Naluri Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Equine Capital Berhad. It will be the world's first "zero-carbon" township when it is completed in phases over 18 years.
The first phase, expected to start in 12 months, entails construction of infrastructures, access roads and a 10.4ha public recreation park that will be known as "Taman Central".
A five-star hotel, twin towers, a convention and arts centre, shopping complexes, condominiums and recreational parks will be built in subsequent phases.
The massive project, expected to create 40,000 jobs, will be a boon to Penang's tourism industry.
At another function in BUTTERWORTH, Abdullah handed Ramadan contributions to 202 mosques in Penang.
In his speech, the Prime Minister urged Muslims to be grateful and thankful to God for the peace and prosperity enjoyed by the nation.
He also reminded Malaysians to drive carefully when returning to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri with their families and loved ones.
